    JOHN B. WATERS, JR. . . .    

was born in Sevierville, Tennessee on July 15, 1929. He received a B.S. degree in finance from the University of Tennessee in 1952. Thereafter, he served as an officer in the United States Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Waters attended the University of Tennessee College of Law, graduating in 1961. Thereafter, he practiced with the firm of Hailey, Waters, Sykes & Sharp until 1984. He was president of the Tennessee Bar Association during 1983 - 1984. He is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and was also named a fellow of the American College of Probate Counsel.

Mr. Waters received a presidential appointment as Federal Co-Chairman of the Appalachian Regional Commission and served in this position from 1968 - 1971, taking a leave of absence from his practice. Mr. Waters was nominated by President Reagan to a nine year term on the Board of Directors of the Tennessee Valley Authority in August of 1984. He was named Chairman of the TVA Board by President Bush in 1992. At the expiration of Mr. Waters' term as TVA Chairman in May of 1993, he became of counsel to the firm.

Mr. Waters has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), the Governing Board of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) and the American Nuclear Society. He also previously served on the Board of Governors of America's Clean Water Foundation and the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Development Authority.
